Senior Workers Compensation Attorney

  Position Description

Responsible for the competent, ethical, and diligent representation ofclients in all cases assigned by supervisor.  Cases can involve allareas of Workers' Compensation practice.  Responsible for handlingmatters of great complexity and/or exposure.  Assists in cases of allcomplexities and/or exposures, and may assist in the handling of casesassigned to other attorneys.  Assists Managing Attorney or SupervisingAttorney in the performance of delegated managerial and administrativeduties.

Position Requirements

Supervises any assigned personnel.  (See attached of SupervisoryResponsibilities job description)Provides job related guidance, supervision and training to otherAttorneys and Hearing Representatives.Performs
managerial and administrative tasks, and special assignments,as requested by supervisor.Supervises cases as assigned and handles those of great complexityand/or exposure, or assists in cases of great complexity and/orexposure, including preparation of petitions, pleadings, motions,discovery, and briefs, attendance at hearings, conferences, interviewsand trials or arbitrations, and performance of any other tasks or dutiesnecessary for the proper representation of clients.Functionally supervises attorneys and hearing representatives who havebeen requested to assist the Workers' Compensation Senior Trial Attorneyin the handling of particular cases.Keeps supervisor informed of the work being done for clients and of anyand all problems encountered.Maintains and updates computerized litigation support systems forassigned caseloads.Consults with and renders opinions to members of the Claims Departmentregarding insurance policy questions and questions concerning the legalaspects of the handling of Workers' Compensation claims.Performs other tasks, duties, or functions as assigned.

Physical Actions

Besides sedentary work, job duties require some or all of the followingphysical activities:  Carrying and lifting up to 25 pounds, hearing,seeing, standing and walking (including up and down stairs and steps).

Physical Environment

Required job duties are normally performed in a climate-controlledoffice environment, with some exposure to uncontrolled outsideenvironmental conditions and travel via automobile and/or commercialtransportation.

Education Requirements

Four year college degree, law school degree, and member in good standingof the State Bar in the state in which position is located.

Experience Requirements

Five years as a Workers' Compensation Attorney or comparable outside experience.  Capable of handling cases of great exposure and/orcomplexity with minimum supervision.  Workers' Compensation management experience or demonstrated management aptitude.

Special Skills Requirements

Public speaking, ability to function in adversarial or confrontationalsituations, driving.Advanced knowledge of rating permanent disabilities (California only).
